Introduction/Review
“JimmyTuyiringire’s beautifully written The Thunder Hunter is a story that takes you back to ancient Rwanda. It is powerful because it feels like it has originated from Rwandan culture and makes you understand how things used to be. Paired with Souls’ artwork, and packaged in print and audio, it then takes Rwandan history or legend into a new form for a contemporary moment. I particularly loved the way Jimmy Tuyiringire makes an explicit comparison between how Rwandans used to perceive the thunder and western vampire narratives. When I first read this short story I immediately wanted to know more about where the story came from, how much was imagination and how much originated from a known history or legend. I was happy then to find the answers of some of these questions in the podcast that accompanies this beautiful print book. In addition, while the story was written in Kinyarwanda it is published here in both English and Kinyarwanda and can reach more people that way. If you are about to read the book or to listen to the podcast, I have no doubt that you won’t stop until you reach the end!” – Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya, Journalist and Communications Expert
